History & significance

The forest-hill Divya Desam of Thirumaliruncholai north-east of Madurai, mentioned in Sangam literature from the 3rd century CE. Each Chithirai festival the deity rides toward Madurai and enters the Vaigai river amid one of Tamil Nadu's largest festive gatherings.

Sthala katha — the legend

Kallalagar is said to journey to Thenur to free the sage Suthapas of Durvasa's frog-curse - the ride his Chithirai procession re-enacts every year.
