The principal goddess temple of Kanchipuram and one of the foremost centres of Shakta worship in the south, where Kamakshi is seated in padmasana rather than standing. Its origins have been variously placed with the Pallavas between the fifth and eighth centuries and with later Chola-period work.
It is told that the goddess Tripura Sundari destroyed the demon Bhandasura and then settled at Kanchipuram; another account says a golden image of Kamakshi was brought here in 1783 after the collapse of Vijayanagara.
