Described as the oldest temple in Kerala dedicated to Vishnumaya Kuttichathan, some 20 km from Thrissur, where 390 Kuttichathans are venerated as attendant deities alongside shrines to Bhadrakali, Bhuvaneswari, Nagaraja and Brahmarakshas.

A sage remembered as Koonamuthappan is said to have won mantras from the Goddess through severe penance, meditated in the Himalayas, and returned to Peringottukara to install Chathan Swamy for the good of humankind.
