History & significance

A hill temple to Shiva as Chandrasekhar in Dhenkanal district, dated by its inscriptions to 1246 and credited to the Eastern Ganga king Narasingha Deva I. Its 60-foot tower stands at about 2,239 feet, reached by a flight of 1,352 steps, and shrines to Ganesha, Kartikeya, Ganga, Jagannath and Vishwanath share the complex.

Sthala katha — the legend

The hill is identified with the ashram of the sage Kapila and is called by some a second Kailash of Shiva.
