Konark, Odisha · 19.8876°, 86.0945°
The Sun God's chariot rendered as architecture: twelve pairs of three-metre carved wheels — each a working sundial — drawn by seven horses, facing the eastern sea. European mariners steered by the 'Black Pagoda' for centuries. The main sanctum tower collapsed in stages; even truncated, Konark remains, in Tagore's words, where 'the language of stone surpasses the language of man'.
Twelve hundred artisans laboured twelve years and could not set the crowning stone; Dharmapada, the master-builder's twelve-year-old son, solved it in a night — then leapt into the sea so the artisans' failure would never be known: Odisha's most cherished legend of sacrifice.
Konark is about 35 km from Puri, the nearest railway station and a major terminus, and about 60 km from Bhubaneswar. Biju Patnaik International Airport at Bhubaneswar, 60 km away, is the closest airport. Regular buses, taxis and autorickshaws run to Konark from both Puri and Bhubaneswar.
