The artistic climax of Vijayanagara: the stone chariot shrine of Garuda (printed on India's ₹50 note) and ranga mandapa whose slender 'musical pillars' ring with distinct notes when struck. Abandoned as a place of worship since the empire's fall, it survives as the most sculpturally extravagant monument of Hampi.
Tradition says the image of Vitthala of Pandharpur was invited here by the emperors, but the god found the temple too grand and returned to his humble brick in Maharashtra — the sanctum has stood empty since.
Hosapete (Hospet) junction, about 13 km away, is the nearest railhead for Hampi. Jindal Vijayanagar airport lies roughly 40 km off and Kempegowda International at Bengaluru is the nearest international gateway, with Bengaluru about 340 km by road — six to seven hours by car or bus. Taxis, buses and rental bikes run from Hosapete into the site.
