History & significance

One of the older Shiva temples of central Travancore, its present sanctum dated to the tenth century and carrying two inscriptions of AD 951-952. The Hanuman shrine within the complex is as widely visited as the main sanctum.

Sthala katha — the legend

Rama is said to have installed the Shiva image here on his return from Lanka, and when Hanuman could not replace it with a lingam fetched from the Himalayas the ground rose into a hillock, making Kaviyoor his permanent abode.
