One of the oldest and most important Bhadrakali temples in Kerala and a principal centre of the state's goddess worship, best known for the Bharani festival. Its date of foundation is not established, though tradition ties it to the Sangam age.
It is told that after Parashurama raised Kerala from the sea the demon Darikan terrorised the land until Bhadrakali sprang from Shiva's three eyes and destroyed him; another tradition identifies the goddess here with Kannaki of the Tamil epic.
