A Murugan temple on the outskirts of Virudhachalam with a five-tiered rajagopuram, pillared hall and sanctum, administered by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE department; Panguni Uthiram, a ten-day Vasantha Utsavam and the Adi festival are its main celebrations.
Tradition holds that Shiva sent his son Murugan as a hunter into the Kolanji forest to test the saint Sundarar, and that Murugan afterwards settled there as Kolanjiappar; another account says a cow was found mysteriously giving milk beneath a kolanji bush at the site.
