The guardian-deity temple of Coimbatore, on the north bank of the Noyyal, built in the eleventh century by descendants of the chieftain Kovan. Its 84-foot gopuram, finished in 2011, is the tallest in the region, and with Perur Pateeswarar it forms the city's pair of historic temples.
The city's name is said to descend from Koyamma, the goddess worshipped by the chieftain Kovan, whose name became Koniamma and gave Koyampuththoor its title.
