History & significance

A cave shrine to Shiva on the Alaknanda about 3 km from Rudraprayag town, at roughly 885 m. Mahashivratri is its main observance, and a 60-bed charitable hospital run by a Shankaracharya trust adjoins the temple.

Sthala katha — the legend

Shiva is said to have paused to meditate in this cave on his way to Kedarnath while eluding the demon Bhasmasura, whom he later destroyed.
