History & significance

Fifteen Buddhist caves in south Konkan near Murud-Janjira, cut in the first century BCE and taken over by Mahayana Buddhists who added sculpture in the fifth or sixth century. Thirty inscriptions record gifts from merchants, physicians and officials, a rare record of lay patronage.
