A Muthappan shrine at about 3,000 feet on Udumbumala in the Sahyadris where the rites are held in a natural forest clearing with no permanent buildings; long tied to the Mannanar house, its management passed to the Karakkatidam Nayanar family after the British took the dynasty's lands following the killing of its last ruler in 1902.
Muthappan is said to have asked for nothing more than fallen leaves, a spring, a mountain, a round stone, forest and palm trees for his worship.
