One of the five principal Shiva temples of Puri, alongside Markandeswara, Jambeswar, Banambara and Kapalamochana, whose linga stands submerged in water. Its festival image is kept inside the Jagannath temple complex, where Lokanatha is regarded as the guardian of Jagannath's treasury; Shivaratri and the Mondays of Vaishakha, Shraavana and Kartika are its main observances.
Rama himself is said to have installed the linga here, and the Ganges is believed to flow through its crown as a hidden stream.
