The only shrine in Odisha to the sister goddesses Markama and Karkama, at Bissam Cuttack in Rayagada district; the goddess served as tutelary deity of the Thatraja rulers, and the buffalo sacrifice once held here was discontinued in 1955.
Local accounts hold that Markama helped the king of Bissam Cuttack win a war by mesmerising the enemy's soldiers.
