History & significance

The great bathing tank at the centre of Kumbakonam, dating at least to the sixteenth century, whose sixteen surrounding mandapas and stone ghats were built by Govinda Dikshitar, minister to the Thanjavur Nayak ruler Ragunatha. Its Mahamaham festival, held once every twelve years, is regarded as the southern counterpart of the Kumbh Mela.

Sthala katha — the legend

It is told that Shiva gathered the seeds of all creation into a cosmic pot before the great flood, and when the pot broke its contents formed this tank, to which the nine river goddesses of India come during the festival to renew their waters.
