A well-known Mariamman temple standing between the Arjuna and Vaippar rivers at Irukkankudi in Virudhunagar district, held to be roughly three centuries old. The sanctum sits beneath a vimana fronted by an artha mandapa and maha mandapa, with further shrines to Vinayaka, Kathavarayan and Karuppusami.
A priest carrying a basket of cow dung is said to have declared, under the goddess's influence, that Amman lay in the ground beneath it; the villagers dug and found a Mariamman image, and built the temple over it.
