A goddess temple at Urwa in Mangaluru raised roughly eight centuries ago by the Mogaveera fishing community, whose members offer gold ornaments shaped as mackerel, sardine, prawn and pomfret in thanksgiving. Fishermen have long prayed here during crises at sea, and the Mari Puja festival falls in early March.
A member of the Mogaveera community is said to have been possessed by the goddess and told by her to build a temple for her at Urwa.
