A shrine to Marubai, the traditional gaondevi or village goddess of Matunga, attested since about 1700 and formally constituted as a public trust in 1952. It survived colonial-era road widening at King's Circle when residents resisted moving it from its original site.
Locals held that shifting the goddess from her original spot beneath the peepal tree would bring down her wrath, so the temple was never relocated.
