History & significance

A Shaivite temple in Klaten with a main shrine and three ancillary perwara chapels, assigned to the Mataram kingdom of the 9th or 10th century on the evidence of its yoni and its Ganesha and Durga Mahishasuramardini images. Reconstruction of the 1,480 sq m compound was completed in 2011, and its stairway carries unusual makara-naga chimeras.
