The serpent temple that gives Nagercoil its name, with a sanctum for the five-headed Nagaraja and further shrines to Ananthakrishna with Rukmini and Satyabhama, and to Shiva. Sixteenth-century inscriptions describe it as a Jain temple, and its pillar carving resembles work of the ninth to twelfth centuries.
A Nambudiri Brahmin returning from a Pandyan king's court is said to have rediscovered a Naga image here and begun its worship, later installing Vishnu and Shiva after a vision.
