History & significance

The Vishnu temple of the sacred Naimisha forest on the Gomti, one of the 108 Divya Desams and counted among the eight self-manifested (Swayamvyakta) Vishnu shrines. The surrounding forest is revered as the place where the Puranas were first recited to the assembled sages.

Sthala katha — the legend

Indra is said to have performed penance to Vishnu at Naimisha for two thousand years to overcome the asura Vritra.
