Built in 783 CE under the Gurjara-Pratihara king Vatsaraja, this is described as the oldest surviving Jain temple in western India and an important tirtha, especially for the Oswal and Maheshwari communities.
Jain tradition holds that miracles worked by Acharya Ratnaprabhasuri converted the villagers of Osian, after which the goddess Chamunda became the temple's guardian deity.
