A twin-goddess temple at Vallikunnam in Mavelikkara taluk, which records indicate has stood for at least 1,200 years. It preserved older ritual forms of worship such as Padayani, Thottam pattu and Kalamezhuthu pattu, and a Devaprashna inquiry confirmed the presence of its two goddesses.
The place is said to be named for a Padayani performance during which villagers glimpsed two radiant women by torchlight, taken to be the two goddesses, for whom temples were then founded.
