Standing on the bank of the Karamana River, this is the only Kerala temple with Parasurama as the presiding deity and is counted among the 108 Abhimana Kshetrams. It is a protected monument of the Kerala Department of Archaeology and carries sub-shrines for Brahma, Matsya, Murugan, Veda Vyasa, Ayyappa, Krishna and Ganesha.
Parasurama is said to have raised Kerala from the sea with his axe and then called on the serpent king Vasuki to sweeten the salt-laden soil, after which serpents became guardians of the land.
