A Bhadrakali temple at Paravur in Kollam district whose Meena Bharani festival is known for its competitive fireworks. On 10 April 2016 an unauthorised display set off the stored fireworks, killing 114 people and injuring more than 350.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
The temple is said to have been founded where the goddess made her presence felt on an ant hill, puttu in Malayalam, which gives the shrine its name.
