History & significance

A Shiva temple at Ilaiyankudi in Ramanathapuram district, counted among the Vaippu Sthalams praised in Tamil Saiva devotional verse, with Gnanambikai as the goddess. It is revered as the birthplace of the Nayanar saint Ilayankudi Maranar, and keeps Maha Shivaratri, Kanda Sashti and Karthikai.
