Begun under the Chaulukya founder Mularaja and consecrated to Shiva by Jayasimha Siddharaja in 1140, this was one of medieval Gujarat's grandest temples. Much of it was destroyed under Ahmad Shah I and part converted into a congregational mosque; the surviving torans and pillars are an ASI Monument of National Importance.
Local lore says two robbers stumbled on the ancient foundations and a Shiva linga at the site, and their report of heavenly visions moved Siddharaja to complete the temple.
