History & significance

One of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim, founded above Pelling in 1701 by Lhatsun Namkha Jikme, its name meaning the island of the Guhyamantra, that is Vajrayana, teachings. Burnt and rebuilt several times, it still holds seventeenth-century clay images and belongs to the pilgrimage circuit that includes Pemayangtse and Tashiding; residence is restricted to male practitioners.
