A coastal Amman temple at Veerampattinam, said to be about a thousand years old and the first in Puducherry to own a temple car. Its festival runs six consecutive Fridays from the Tamil month of Aadi, and the fifth Friday, a declared public holiday in Puducherry, draws well over a hundred thousand pilgrims; under French rule the Lieutenant Governor was invited to start the procession.
A fisherman named Veeraraghavan is said to have netted a piece of wood that bled when his wife tried to split it for firewood, after which the goddess told him in a dream to make her image from it at the spot where a cobra struck the ground three times.
