History & significance

One of the five Pancharama Kshetras, at Bhimavaram in West Godavari district, and a centrally protected monument of national importance. Its lotus-covered tank, the Chandrakundam, adjoins a Nandi hall and sanctum whose linga is reported to change colour with the phases of the moon.

Sthala katha — the legend

The linga is said to have been installed by the moon god Chandra, which is why it turns white at the full moon and dark at the new.
