The principal shrine of Sringeri, traditionally founded by Adi Shankara in the 8th century and dedicated to Sharadamba. Pindari raiders sacked it during the Third Anglo-Mysore War in 1791, after which Tipu Sultan wrote to the Sringeri Shankaracharya offering protection, money and gifts to restore it.
