History & significance

First of the nine Nava Tirupati temples strung along the Tamiraparani and a Divya Desam revered by Nammalvar, ranked next only to Alwarthirunagari among the nine; royal grants are recorded from Jatavarman Kulasekaran I (1190-1216) onward.

Sthala katha — the legend

Vishnu is said to have slain the asura Somuka, who stole the four Vedas from Brahma, and then taken residence here as Vaikuntanatha.
