One of the 108 Shiva temples of Kerala and one of the four thali temples named in the 108-temple hymn, where the god is worshipped in his fierce aspect. It was a principal shrine of the Thekkumkur kingdom, which Marthanda Varma annexed to Travancore after the Changanassery war of 1750.
