History & significance

A Durga shrine in Gorakhpur district bound up with the 1857 uprising: the rebel leader Bandhu Singh took the goddess as his chosen deity and worshipped here before his raids on the British. He was hanged on 12 August 1857, and the temple keeps his memory.
