History & significance

A Vishnu temple set among the Brahmagiri hills of Wayanad, reached through forest and long resorted to for ancestral rites performed at the nearby Papanasini stream.

Sthala katha — the traditional account

What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.

Brahma is said to have found an image of Vishnu inside an amla tree at this spot and recognised the place as the god's own heavenly abode.
