One of the older and better-known Shiva temples of Varanasi, believed to have been built in the 18th century in the Bhelupur quarter. Its lingam stands about three and a half feet high with a base roughly three feet across.
The lingam is said to have emerged of its own accord 2,500 years ago and to grow each year by the width of a sesame seed, from which the temple takes its name.
