A rock-cut Shiva temple set inside a natural cave about 30 feet long on a hillock in Trikkur, with its mukha mandapa carved from the living rock. It has been a protected monument under the Kerala Department of Archaeology since 1966 and is looked after by the Paliyam Trust and a local protection committee.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
The large Shivalinga is believed to have been consecrated by Agni, who is said to worship Shiva here perpetually, which is why the image is never taken outside in procession during the rains.
