Built in 1739 on the vow Chimaji Appa made before the goddess when he set out to take Bassein Fort from the Portuguese. After the victory of 16 May 1739 he had the new subhedar, Shankar Keshav Phadke, raise the temple.
The goddess is said to have sprung from the vajra after the demon Kalikala shattered it, and to have destroyed him.
