History & significance

A Divya Desam believed to be a Pandya foundation with its earliest inscription of 1236 CE and later Vijayanagara and Madurai Nayak additions; it is revered as one of the eight svayambu (self-manifested) fields of Vishnu.

Sthala katha — the traditional account

What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.

Adishesha and Garuda are both said to have done penance here, winning the honours of serving as Vishnu's couch and as the guardian of Vaikuntha.
