One of the three principal temples of Mangadu on the western edge of Chennai, about two kilometres from the Kamakshi Amman temple, counted in the Navagraha circuit around the city as the shrine of Sukra and administered by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE department.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
Sukra, the planet Venus, is said to have worshipped Shiva here, which is why the deity is called Velleeswarar or Bhargaveswarar; the same tradition places Kamakshi's penance at Mangadu before her marriage to Shiva at Kanchipuram.
