A Shiva temple about 10 km from Tiruchirappalli on the Lalgudi road, counted among the Vaippu Sthalams sung by Appar. It is unusual in placing Vishnu with his consorts in the niche that a Shiva temple normally gives to Chandra and Surya, and its inner prakara holds shrines to Vinayaka, Subramania and Saraswati.
What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.
The name recalls the churning of the ocean of milk, when Shiva is said to have held back the poison that rose from it and so saved the world.
