History & significance

A Shiva temple in Thiruvamaathur village, Viluppuram district, and one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the 7th-century Tevaram. The main shrine as it stands was built by Achyuta Deva Raya of Vijayanagara over older Pallava and Chola work.

Sthala katha — the legend

Cows are said to have prayed to Shiva here for horns with which to defend themselves, and the place took its name from that boon.
