History & significance

A mid-10th-century temple raised by the Western Ganga king Butuga II to mark his defeat of the Cholas at the Battle of Takkolam, with a plain plan of sanctum, vestibule, closed hall and detached open mantapa. Its rounded pillars carry bas-reliefs of that victory over the Chola prince Rajaditya. It is a monument of national importance under the Archaeological Survey of India.
