History & significance

Commissioned in 1537 by Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bengaluru, under Vijayanagara rule, this shrine holds one of the largest Nandi images anywhere, a granite monolith about 15 feet high and 20 feet long, blackened by generations of charcoal and oil. Its tower was added in the early 20th century, and the temple hosts the Kadalekaayi Parishe groundnut fair each Karthika month.
