A thirteenth-century Hindu-Buddhist temple of the Singhasari kingdom about 22 kilometres from Malang, commemorating King Vishnuvardhana deified as Shiva in the form of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara; the name Adityawarman appears on a Manjushri image of 1343 found here. The Nagarakretagama of the fourteenth century calls it majestic and records a visit by King Hayam Wuruk on royal progress. Its bas-reliefs run through four narrative cycles, read anticlockwise in the prasawya manner.
Among the reliefs are scenes of King Angling Dharma, remembered as able to understand the speech of animals, alongside Tantri fables that teach moral lessons through animal characters.
