A thirteenth-century syncretic Hindu-Buddhist temple raised as the funerary monument of Kertanagara, last king of the Singhasari dynasty, who ruled from 1268 to 1292; a large original image of Shiva as Bhatara Guru stands in the lower southern chamber and a second cella above carries the Buddhist dedication. It is named in the Nagarakretagama and in the Gajah Mada inscription of 1351, and was never finished, as the incomplete kala head over the lower entrance shows. King Chulalongkorn of Siam visited in 1896 and took away a four-armed Ganesha now in the Bangkok National Museum.
