History & significance

A slender 24.5 m temple raised as the mortuary shrine of Kertanegara, the last king of Singhasari, and built to express the Shiva-Buddha synthesis he professed: a Shaivite cella holding a yoni, with Durga, Ganesha, Nandi and Brahma images, set beneath a pinnacle combining a cube with a Buddhist stupa.

Sthala katha — the traditional account

What follows is the temple’s own traditional account, transmitted through liturgy and local memory. It is recorded here as tradition, not as attested history.

When lightning struck the monument in 1331 the image of the Buddha Akshobhya is said to have vanished from it, a disappearance read as a manifestation of shunyata, emptiness.
