Built about 1437, a date given as a chronogram on its western gate, this temple on the slopes of Mount Lawu takes the form of a truncated stepped pyramid on three terraces, a trapezoidal plan unlike anything else among Java's classical monuments. Its carving is openly concerned with fertility, sexuality and ancestor worship, and the temple departs from the Wastu Vidya canon because it was raised as Hindu practice on Java was already weakening. It belongs to the last phase of temple building before the island's courts turned to Islam in the sixteenth century; when Raffles visited in 1815 he found the statues damaged and the great lingga broken.
