History & significance

A soapstone ekakuta shrine built in 1163 CE by a minister of the Hoysala king Narasimha I, with lathe-turned pillars, tiers of miniature vimanas and the Hoysala royal emblem on its sukhanasi. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Sthala katha — the legend

The emblem carried on the tower shows Sala, the legendary founder of the Hoysala line, stabbing a lion.
